MATERIAL GUIDE
Calico
Calico is made from cotton. Upbags uses only GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) Certified Organic Cotton. Calico has a natural colour (due to being unbleached or dyed) and is usually a lighter material than it’s cousin ‘canvas’, however the biggest difference is the weave which is closely but lightly woven. Calico fabric thickness is measured by a ‘GSM’ (grams per square meter) grading system. Most calico bags are 140gsm, at Upbags our standard thickness is 180GSM.
We supply as standard a natural unbleached or dyed fabric but can also supply calico dyed in the colour of your choice using eco-friendly dyes.
Upbags Calico is certified organic, unbleached and thicker than standard calico bags.
Canvas
Canvas is usually made from cotton. Upbags uses only GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) Certified Organic Cotton to manufacture canvas. Typically thicker than calico it has a tight weave creating a more heavy duty, denser fabric. Canvas fabric thickness is measured by a ‘GSM’ (grams per square meter) grading system and also in imperial ounces. Upbags standard canvas is 275GSM (10 ounces).
We supply as standard a natural unbleached or dyed fabric but can also supply canvas dyed in the colour of your choice using eco-friendly dyes.
Upbags Canvas is certified organic.
Jute
Jute, sometimes called ‘Hessian’ is a naturally bio- biodegradable fabric.
We have two options with jute bags – laminated or starched. Most bags on the Australian market feature plastic laminate on the inside of the bag. This helps the bags maintain their shape. Alternatively, we can supply jute bags with 100% eco-friendly maize/starch coating inside making the bag rigid. This finish is becoming increasingly popular.
We supply as standard a natural unbleached or dyed fabric but can also supply jute dyed in the colour of your choice using eco-friendly dyes.
Upbags Jute is fully biodegradable.
Juco
Juco brings together the tighter weave of a cotton bag and the hard-wearing durability found in traditional jute bags. Juco is a relatively new and sturdy fabric made of a mixture of jute (75%) and cotton (25%). Featuring a finer weave, similar to cotton or canvas and so allows a fine print.
We supply as standard a natural unbleached or dyed fabric but can also supply jute dyed in the colour of your choice using eco-friendly dyes.
Upbags Juco is made from a mix of biodegradable jute and organic cotton.
